A small sign of life!

Hi!!

I just want to say hi and let you know that I am still here!

No news about the coming album, we are still working a little with it. Maybe one song is missing! We have to find out…!

Other things are going on, too! Per Gessle releases his new album very very soon, and I am grateful to be part of it! I haven´t heard the final results yet. But while we recorded it, I felt like: out of all the Gessle/ Son of A Plumber-albums I have participated on since we started collaborating in 2003, this one is my favourite. Actually, I discovered a lot of new things I didn´t know I could do. I don´t think I have ever felt sexy before in a song, but now I did. Then, maybe it doesn´t SOUND that way, but still! It is exciting to learn how to express new things through the singing and improvisation!

One trick I have when I try to dive into my own self when I record, is to turn the lights off. I always do that. It is like, if noone can see me then I can do whatever I want, I don´t have to be shy or afraid of anything. Then I dare to do new things, that I really don´t master. But if I feel viewed or I feel someone is going to judge what I sing, it is impossible to discover something new from my depths. Before I used to do the same if someone was going to take pictures of Sandy Mouche, or making a video shoot. Then I would take my contacts off, so everyone around turned blurry. If I don´t see them, they can´t see what I do :o) Works for the ostrichts, so why not? :o)

Martinique had a couple of nice pictures from last year when we played in Västerås and in Gothenburg- here you go!

Martinique, Rasmus, me and Christoffer A inside a drum skin frame in Västerås!

What I remember from this show is that Christoffer got so hungry, and after he had eaten he almost went into a choma- we must bring more fruit and in-between-meals to the tourbus next time!

On our way to Gothenburg!

The hotel room in Gothenburg was very small, we were going to sleep 8 people in a tiny room. So Johan (bass) thought he might as well check if he could fall straight on his back without bending.

But Malin, me and Emeli felt some privacy would be nice…

…so we asked my sister Lotta ( on the left side) if we could sleep at her place! And yes- we could :o)

The show went very well! Even though the monitor guy wasn´t too used to the equipment I think, there was a lot of strange and loud sounds on the stage- but we made it anyway! Doing some homework in the car and I have stolen Martiniques sweater- I like it, it looks like green peas, mmmm!

Hugs and hot chocolate from me to you!

The recording has landed! almooooost….!

Now I have been listening and listening to recording, and my reaction was all new- Martin and I started listening in a car on our way to his mother´s summer house, not far from the studio. And my head started banging and I started shouting and yelling and dancing there in the car-I have never felt that way from listening to my own music. But somehow, I always knew that one day, I would be able to really dance to my music. Finally! When we came back home, I sent a copy to the guardian angel and record company Per Gessle. Nervous… would I have to write even more songs? Now he has listened too, and he was also happy with the results! Luckily….!! The funny part is that the two songs he likes least are my own favourites :o)

Still, he felt he missed one song from the demo recordings. It is a Greek song that I have heard in the flamenco lessons, and I have made my own lyrics. He asked us to record this song. I am happy about it because the song is very interesting but it means that the album is NOT quite finished yet. I could not get an appointment in the studio until the end of August or so. But finally it WILL be finished and I am already longing for when we will start playing the songs live!

While I am awaiting for it all to be finished, I am going for a vacation! First we will visit my father on his 60:th birthday just above Gothenburg, and then, to Martin´s relatives in Piteå, in the very north of Sweden.

Here I just want to share some photos with you from last summer!

A day off from the touring last summer, Martin and I discovering the surroundings of Halmstad! There was a place in the middle of nowhere where they made really great italian ice cream!! I was raised eating a lot of ice cream because my father he is a real snowman who loves it himself :o)

This is what it looked like, before the Per Gessle concert in Halmstad, when Lisa made our hair and makeup. I was enjoying the company of all the kids of the band: Frida, Billy, Hugo, Ella, Agnes and Ingrid wearing her dad´s hat! Lisa would give them some lipgloss and a curl each in their hair. But I think Hugo passed on that one :o)

Martin took a picture of the “By your side” video when it was shown on the big screen as a part of the warm up videos before the show! I have very Biiiiig wrinkles :o)

Here you can see my big sister Charlotta and I, and on the right her friend, after the show in Gothenburg. I showed them to the tour bus when no one was around, I wanted to show them all the facilities. I have never seen such a luxurious thing: massage chair in the bus, dvd movies to watch in a leather couch, fridge full of beverages, and lots of beds! Look at the beautiful sunflowers that Ilya from Russia brought… It felt so unreal, like a fairy tale… It was a great night thanks to the audience and the good weather!

Take a look at the fantastic flowers… Don´t they make you happy! Flowers are so alive, they bring life to a

whole apartment!

Now I won´t have so much to write about the record for a while but I will keep you updated as soon as something happens!

Love, Helena

Waiting for the mix….

Now one week has passed since the recording was finished… And Christoffer is mixing it right now, he will be finished any minute now! And I feel so strange, one week apart from the music feels like one year! I miss it, and I can´t wait til an envelope with the mixes fall down from the hole in the door! Then I will take my bike to the beach and lie there listening over and over again :o) I remember the latest Sandy Mouche record, we did that and it was such a fantastic feeling! When you have been writing and writing and singing and singing and waiting and waiting, and finally- there it is! Now I just hope that the release date won´t be too delayed. It was said to be released this fall- let´s see what the record company has to say after they´ve heard the recording.

In the meantime, here are some pictures from the ending of the recording:

A small choir from Vollsjö added angelic voices! It put tears to my eyes….

k

And Christoffer´s daughter Ingrid borrowed my big shoes and Christoffer´s guitar-she looks like candy! But her favourite instrument is the drums, but it´s not as interesting as horses.

And here are two pictures from last summer, when Martinique, Christoffer and I played in Visby, Gotland, in addition to the Gessle tour. A big part of the crew came to the show as a cheering audience, and the air was very very thick and the room felt like it had ghosts in it, the music loved it in there.

Strawberry cake and final documentary filming

Christoffer´s children have finished this semester and their mother Ylva celebrated it with strawberry cake! And she came and gave me a piece too…!!!! The first strawberry cake for the summer :o) Jessica Nettelbladt who makes a documentary about female musicians of which I am one, was here that day and together with her, the cake tasted even better!

Two days later, we met up at a cottage 1 hour away from the studio towards the sea, and I left Christoffer alone in the studio. He needed to rest so the timing was good. Here in this cottage, we made the last meeting all five of us who are in the documentary. We had a great time, talking about our dreams and what had happened since last time, and we had salmon from the grill! Yummie :o) The other girls slept over in the cottage, while I went back to the studio to keep working.  Here you can see how cosy it was:

It is Nina Persson, Lotta Wenglén, Cecilia Nordlund and arranger Gudrun Hauksdottir plus me in the movie. It will be edited this fall and then I hope you will soon be able to see the result! The cottage belongs to Magnus Svenningsson, bassplayer of the Cardigans, and his girlfriend and it was very beautiful!

And here you see the filmteam:

t

The documentary has been a lot of fun to be part in, and I am sure I have made new friends for life! Both with Jessica, and the other musicians!!

Backing vocals and James Dean in the studio

The other day, Hanna came to do some backing vocals. Christoffer had discovered her through a recording he did with a 9th grade class the other month, and was excited by her voice! The results became very satisfying! This week she will be back for some more songs. She is only 15 years old. It is a new thing for me to have other vocals than my own on a recording, and it felt good. Someone with a different voice who is new to the pop genre makes it more rough, jippie! When Christoffer and I do aaah-harmonies it is just too polished…… At the end of the session, she gave Christoffer some help with the clarinet!

On two sundays, Martinique has come over!  Then I buy strawberries and other good things to celebrate it! He loves being around cats and he recorded some bells with the kitten on his lap, but he also played football with the rabbit in the garden.

Invasion of the guitars!

My first soloalbum “Dynamo” contained only one guitar, it was a slide guitar on “Air-Hostess” But the other day Christoffer couldn´t help himself any longer. It started with one guitar, but ended with….

!!!!! Invasion!!!

You see there are two songs that really beg for it, and that has to be obeyed :o) And on these two songs, there will be almost nothing else than guitars and vocals. It´s all or nothing!  One of them is a ballad for our planet and the other one is dreamy and sleepy , it feels like a lullaby. I am looking forward to the live performances when the album is released, where Martinique and drummer Rasmus (who is originally a guitarist) can sit in front with me like as if it was by the fireplace…. mmmmmm…!!!

Here you see me enjoying the results in the headphones… Next week a children´s choir from Fränninge, the village next door, will join in on one of these two songs! That will be exciting because they have so beautiful voices :o)

The old man´s house!

Today I want to show you how I live when the record is being made!

It is a house 20 minutes walk from the studio, or 10 minutes by bike. It is called “Gubbens Hus”, which means “The house of the old man”. Because of who lived there before Christoffer and his wife Ylva bought it, as an accomodation for all the musicians and artists who record in the Aerosol Grey Machine. Looki looki!

This recording means it is the first time that I´ve been living here all by myself and it was a bit scary at first, going home at midnight with the moonlight as my only guidance (the dynamo of the bike was broken:o) I was looking over my shoulder to make sure no warewolves were running after me. And I made it without any attacks! As soon as I got to the house I saw a movie and made some popcorn and I started to feel at home.

My favourite bedroom is this green one, it is away from the road so you don´t hear the cars. It is surprising how many cars that drive by there in the middle of nowhere all through the night, and really fast, too. I wonder where they´re going? When I wake up after 9 or 10 hours of sleep ( singing and listening craves a lot of sleep at least for me that is ), I open the window, and this is the view! Small birds are singing, cows are eating- isn´t it great!

Lonely breakfast means porridge and fruit- I think it tastes good. But the time this picture was taken, I had come all the way to the studio by bus, and the last 5 kilometres by bike, so I couldn´t bring any apple-mash which is my favourite on the porridge. I only brought the most necessary things. And finally you see me going on the gravelled road, for another exciting day in the studio!

Kittens in the studio

I am still on a break from the studio, until monday…. Can´t wait to go there again!

Then we will finish the whole album including mixing. And Christoffer has his deadline on midsummer, it is the 20th of June. It feels like we´re gonna make it, as long as he stays well, and is not too tired from all his other work. But it is good for him when I am there because he is free to do it his own way and rest when he needs it. We have 5 backgrounds with vocals recorded that just need to be finished with additional sounds, and polishing the programmed drums. We can finish 1-2 songs a day. And then we will record 2-4 more backgrounds and vocals to work with. So I think we will make the deadline!

Before Monday Martinique and I will go to London for fun and inspiration- I have never been there and I think it will be amazing :o)))

I want to show you the children of “Vitnos” (”Whitenose”)! They live in Christoffer´s house. Their names are Mirran, Lillnos and Findus- have you seen anything cuter?

I would like to have a cat or two but I live in an apartment just by a big street and on the 3rd floor with no grass outside, so I think we must wait. But when I lived in the countryside we had a lot of cats, I think they are great animals. You can´t tell them what to do and they really know how to enjoy life, sleeping in the sunlight and doing what they want! I have never had a dog so I am a little afraid of them, once I was hunted by a big black one and one other time I was bitten in the thigh. But I think that dog was just playing but still she made me scared. Maybe it is because I am not used to dogs. I have heard that if I smile and my teeth show, a dog might think I am angry. So now I can´t really smile in a normal way to a dog and it makes me a bit tense of course and I know they sense that very quickly! But Martinique has had both dogs and cats (once they had 8 cats at a time :o). I think he would be great with a dog. He thinks Rhodesian Ridgeback is a very beautiful kind. Maybe one day! Have a great week end and I´ll see you soon!

My lucky day was yesterday!

sy

Yesterday at 18.00 in Konsthallen restaurant (the art gallery restaurant) of Malmö was my lucky day!
A foundation called Sparbanksstiftelsen, give away scholarships to young (didn´t know i still fit into that category :o) local artists- and this year I was one of the lucky ones! The honour is enormous and the prize helps me so much to support myself during the recording and promoting of the coming album. A short inspirational trip to London where Martinique and I will see the musical “Billy Elliot” will be something to remember this lucky night by! Thank you thank you thank you Sparbanken!

I was honored by my mother Margareta, my father Per Olof and my friend Hanna, and Christoffer Andersson my pianist and friend. You can see them all on the photos. We played one song from the coming album and it felt great, I was just so happy I almost cried…

a

And here is the motivation from the jury:

“Helena Josefsson is a left handed, firm woman who has decided to take at least one risk a day. This has led to the brave step from working as a shop assistant to concentrating fully on a carreer as a singer. She has already met a large audience during her tours with Per Gessles group Son of a Plumber. Also, she has sung on recordings with Andreas Johnsson and The Ark. But above all, she has her own carreer, where she gets to show her precise sense for lyrics, melody and singing. She puts strong feelings of love and longing to life, but also a fantasy world inhabited by fairies and trolls. She is delighted by the theatrical, but her personality and stage precense is always enchanting and disarming.”

Guide to the Aerosol Grey Machine

Now I want to show you what the studio looks like! It is an old stable that Christoffer and his wife, architecht Ylva Lundquist, have turned into a studio. The house on the picture is where the family lives, and on the left side you see the barn (the studio). With a symbol of good luck on the door!

The studio has buttons and machines that you can only dream of, but still the machines would be nothing without Chtistoffer! This record is mainly done by computer so this is what it looks like when it comes to life. I remember the first time I came to the studio and saw Christoffer , he looked like a brownie with his beard and running around in the snow with his clogs :o)

This violet button is my favourite lamp, diode, in the studio! Nice isn´t it ;o ) Here you can also see the drum-room.

This is my view from the listening-sofa!!
